Italy and Austria with the Barrys

We've had a wonderful week of train travel and sightseeing from Milan, Italy, through the Alps to Salzburg, Austria with our friends, Lou and Kelly Barry. They couldn't be any easier to be with and be around. We have had so much fun and lots of laughs and managed to live in the moment every day. Kelly fulfilled her lifelong dream of visiting Salzburg, especially going on the Sound of Music tour. I think singing the soundtrack on the tour bus along with fans from all over the world was a highlight for me. The fact that this movie is so universally beloved was obvious - everyone knew all the words to the songs! We met people from Canada, Dubai, Zambia and even The Woodlands, Texas, on our bus. Salzburg is one of the host cities for the three week Euro 2008 games (football to them, soccer to us). We sandwiched our trip between two games last week, so nothing was very crowded. The city was bustling with happy fans from all over Europe, decked out in their fan colors and gear. Being sports fans ourselves, we could relate a little bit to all that excitement. Most everyone in Salzburg speaks English and the locals were so friendly. It's now one of my favorite cities in the world.

Christmas Blessings All Year Long!

It's cold and rainy today in Houston. Perfect day to stay inside by the fire and sleep...but instead we're headed to Costco to shop! We're almost ready for Christmas. Just a few more presents to buy. Jay decorated the outside of the house this year which is a great present to us. Bobby will be home on the 18th. We missed him at Thanksgiving but wanted him to stay longer at Christmas and he can't be home for both holidays. Dylan is walking everywhere now and making his wishes known more and more every day. He may not know the word but he can scrunch down his little brow and give you a grunt that tells you exactly what he means! He is so cute. I'll try to capture that "look" on camera and post it online. The newsletter is ready to go out, the out of town gifts have been mailed and now we just need to wrap all the gifts we've ordered and bought. Taking The Challenge

Many Sundays our pastor offers us a challenge based on something he preached about. During Advent, he preached on the book "The Advent Conspiracy". WORSHIP FULLY, SPEND LESS, GIVE MORE AND LOVE ALL - are the basic guidelines from the book. As a reminder for us to try and live these guidelines during the next year, he proposed this challenge: when packing away the ornaments, choose one to be placed in a prominent place in the house. Let this ornament serve as a spiritual reminder to "live" Christmas all year. Simple, right? For some, the ornament may be enough. But for me, I think I'll need something more - something bigger - more "in my face". My guys gave me more pieces for my "Willow Tree" Nativity set. It's on the baby grand downstairs in the living room. I will see it every day, several times a day. Can't miss it, even if I tried. I have challenged myself to stop and look at it every day.
